2008 FOOD FESTIVAL VENUES ARCHIVE

Foreword by Brian Turner

Brian TurnerWelcome to the 2008 Derbyshire Food Festival website, which I’m sure will whet your appetite and inspire you to sample some of the treats available around the county.

The Derbyshire Food & Drink Industry is thriving and has lots of superb high quality local produce on offer.  It’s very important to be able to showcase local producers and suppliers as well as highlighting the best eateries for locals and visitors alike. Using local, seasonal produce benefits us all. Not only are we assured of the freshest ingredients but we get the satisfaction of knowing that we are boosting the local economy and reducing food miles, which makes us all winners.

The 2008 Derbyshire Food Festival certainly promises to be the best yet with more venues than ever participating, providing special offers and one-off events throughout the week 17-26 May 2008.  The festival now in its third year, is an excellent showcase for producers and eateries alike and I’m sure anyone visiting one of the participating establishments, locals or visitors to the county won’t be disappointed.

You’re spoilt for choice in Derbyshire – so enjoy.

The 2008 Derbyshire Food Festival will be launched at the Fair on the 17th May and will run until 26th May 2008.  The Festival enables a range of Derbyshire Food and Drink establishments, including hotels, farms, pubs, shops and restaurants to put on a special event within their establishment, to provide a unique experience for festival goers.  Festival events will range from taster sessions of local produce, special Derbyshire menus, cookery demonstrations, tours, competitions, talks and much more.

Scotts Garden began to ‘grow’ in 2004 with what started out as a huge allotment on which to 'play', paraphrasing my landlord, and has become a growing business that is filling a market niche never before tapped.  I say this because the farm is situated at nearly a 1000 feet in the Peak District village of Riber over looking Matlock and I now have 3 acres of fully certified Organic land with another acre in conversion.

Derbyshire is not a county known for it's vegetable production let alone for it's top fruit but here I am, having a go with over 200 Apples, Plums, Damsons, Pears, Quinces and Cherries that are growing well along side a great selection of Soft Fruit with Blueberries to follow!

I launched the Box Scheme last June, delivering to over 70 regular weekly customers and also stand at Matlock & Bakewell Farmers Markets.

In the 2007 Derbyshire Food Awards, I was Highly Commended in the ‘Local Food Hero’ category and this has served to inspire me further!

Festival Events:

For Derbyshire Food Festival I will be opening the farm to visitors on Sunday 18th - Wednesday 21st May.    Please call to book a tour.
